José de Sousa Saramago was a Portuguese writer. He was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize for Literature. He also won the Camões Prize, the most important literary award in the Portuguese language, in 1995. Saramago is considered responsible for the effective international recognition of Portuguese-language prose.
